The rising costs of college education have made higher education a distant dream for many students. As education is a tool for carrying out national growth so various scholarships and grants are awarded to increase the level of support given to the education in Nigeria. In order to pay for tuition, books and other expenses, students need to thoroughly explore a variety of funding options.
This section consists of information regarding scholarships for Nigerian Students. Luckily, scholarship or financial aid is willingly provided to those who choose to major in one of the many areas including Humanities Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Agriculture and Engineering, Applied Sciences, Biotechnology, Genetics, Soil Science, MBA, Banking and Finance, Literature, American Studies, Communication, Computer Science and Data Processing, Education, Industrial Arts, Trade and Technology, Law, Mathematical Sciences and Medical Sciences. Various scholarships are available for undergraduate, graduate, masterPhD and postdoctoral programs for Nigerian students. IDRC Doctoral Research Awards for Canadians and Developing Countries in Canada, 2014
IDRC offers research awards for Canadians and developing countries’ students for pursuing doctoral studies at a Canadian university. These awards are intended for field research in one or more developing countries. Students must have completed coursework and passed comprehensive exams before taking up the award. Approximately 20 to 25 awards are offered per competition and will cover justifiable field research expenses up to CA$20,000 a year.
The application deadline is October 2, 2013 and April 2, 2014,
Development Scholarships for Nigerian Students and Developing Countries in Czech Republic, 2014/15
The Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University through the support of the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport offers five partial scholarships for developing countries. Applications for these scholarships are open to all students from developing countries and/or countries going through a process of political and economic transition. Students who are applying for study in one of Bachelor’s studies or Master’s studies programmes at Faculty of Social Sciences from academic year 2014/15 can apply. The deadline for scholarship applications is 30th April 2014.
Westminster International Scholarships for Nigerian Students and Developing Countries’ Students in UK, 2014
University of Westminster offers international scholarships for developing countries. The scholarships are available for pursuing master’s degree level. The scholarships will provide full tuition fee waiver, accommodation, living expenses and flights to and from London. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, financial need and development potential. The application deadline is November 1, 2013.
Netherlands Fellowship Programmes for Master’s Degree, PhD Research and Short Courses, 2013/14
Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation is offering Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) for developing country applicants. The fellowship is available for master’s, PhD and short courses. Students must be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries in the NFP country list valid at the time of application. If for whatever reason a candidate stays in another country other than his or her home country for more than 90 days before the start of the course and/ or programme, he or she is not considered to be living and working in his or her home country. Application should be submitted till 1St October 2013.
TWAS-USM Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for Developing Countries, 2014
TWAS-USM offers postdoctoral fellowship to pursue advanced research in the natural sciences at Universiti Sains Malaysia. Fellowships are offered for a minimum period of twelve (12) months to a maximum period of three years and are awarded to young scientists from developing countries. USM will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation and food. The application deadline is 15 September of each year.
CAS Fellowship for Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholars from Developing Countries in China, 2013
Bureau of International Cooperation Chinese Academy of Sciences is offering CAS fellowship for postdoctoral and visiting scholars from Developing Countries to pursue research programme (Short-term Visiting and Postdoctoral fellowship) at CAS-affiliated research institutions (CAS institutes; USTC and UCAS). Proficiency in English and Chinese are required. The deadline for applications is 15 September.
Intermediate Fellowships in Public Health and Tropical Medicine, UK

Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme in Global Health at UNU-IIGH in Malaysia, 2014
Each year, United Nations University-International Institute for Global Health offers postdoctoral fellowship in Global Health at UNU-IIGH in Malaysia. Applicants of developing countries are eligible for applying this fellowship. The period of the postdoctoral fellowship is twelve months. These five fellowships cover monthly stipend, accommodation and airfare and provide internet facility. English language proficiency is required. The deadline for applications for the fellowship is 31st October 2013.
UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowships Programme for Developing Countries, 2014
Each year, the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the capacity-building of Human Resources which was established by the Government of Japan funds offers UNESCO/Japan young researchers’ fellowships for developing countries. Priority attention will be given to women candidatures, candidates from least developed countries (LDCs) and African researchers. 20 fellowships are awarded to pursue research in four areas of development of particular interest to UNESCO. Selected students will be awarded a fellowship of US$6,000 to US$10,000 for  a minimum period of 3 months and a maximum of 9 months. The application deadline is 30th August 2013.
ICTP Mathematics Research Fellowships for Developing Countries in Italy, 2013/14
The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is inviting applications for research fellowships from developing countries. A small number of fellowships are awarded for outstanding mathematicians of any age to participate in the Mathematics activities of ICTP, the International School of Advanced Studies (ISAS/SISSA) and the University of Trieste, including the opportunity to interact with visiting mathematicians. South–North Research Scholarships for Postdoctoral Researchers from Developing Countries in Germany, 2014
he Food Security Center (FSC) is offering research scholarships for visiting postdoctoral researchers from developing countries to conduct research at University of Hohenheim, Germany. Three scholarships are awarded for a period of four months in 2014. The monthly grant is EUR 1,000 for junior postdoctoral researchers and EUR 1,990 for senior post-doctoral researchers. Travel costs to/from Stuttgart will be covered. Health insurance and other costs must be paid for from the stipend. The deadline of application is August 15, 2013.
TWAS-CSIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for Developing Countries in India, 2014
TWAS-CSIR offers postdoctoral fellowship programme for developing countries in the field of science and technology. These fellowships are tenable in CSIR research laboratories and institutes in India for a minimum period of six months to a maximum period of twelve months. The CSIR will provide a monthly stipend to cover living costs, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. In addition, Fellowship awardees are entitled to subsidized accommodation. The application deadline is 31 August of each year.
MMMF Grant for Women of Developing Countries in South Africa, 2014
Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund is offering grant for women of developing countries in South Africa. Applicant must be women and enrolled at the University of Pretoria, the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch or the University of Witwatersrand. After the completion of the program applicants must return to their home countries. Applicants must be in financial need and must have good academic performance.  MMMF awards grants of approximately US$4,000 each. The deadline for applications is August 14, 2013.
TWAS-icipe Fellowships for Visiting Scholars from Developing Countries in Kenya, 2014
The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), Nairobi, Kenya and TWAS offer fellowship for visiting scholars from developing countries in Kenya. Fellowship is provided in the field of natural sciences. Fellowship is available for pursuing advanced research in natural sciences. Fellowship is offered for a minimum period of one month to a maximum period of three months. The application deadline is 15 September of each year.
Country Scholarships for Nigerian Students at University of Sussex in UK, 2013
University of Sussex offers scholarships for postgraduate students from India, Nigeria or Pakistan. The scholarships will provide £3,000 for all eligible new overseas fee paying postgraduate taught (Master’s, not PG Dip) students. Applicants must have accepted an offer for a full-time place on a Master’s course at the University of Sussex commencing in September 2013. The application deadline is 1st August 2013.
South-South PhD Sandwich Scholarships for Nigerian Students and Developing Countries, 2014
The Food Security Center (FSC) is offering up to four visiting Sandwich scholarships for PhD students to pursue research at a partner institute, research center or development organization located in a developing country. The monthly grant is 500 Euros. In addition, FSC pays for traveling to/from the partner institute. Health insurance and other costs must be paid for from the stipend. The deadline of application is August 15, 2013.
South–North PhD Sandwich Scholarships for Nigerian Students and Developing Countries at University of Hohenheim in Germany, 2014
Each year, The Food Security Center (FSC) offers Sandwich scholarships to PhD students from developing countries for conducting PhD thesis related research studies at the University of Hohenheim, Germany. In addition, the successful candidates can select from the regular course catalogues of the international MSc and PhD study programs offered by the University of Hohenheim. The deadline of application is August 15, 2013.
Doctoral Scholarships for Nigerian Students in Valuation of Ecosystem Services in Rural West Africa in Germany, 2013
Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding doctoral scholarship for applicants of developing countries. Students can pursue their PhD degree level at ZEF in Bonn, Germany. The tenure of PhD scholarship is one year and extended for up to three years.
The scholarship will cover living, research as well as travel costs. Applicants have to participate for 6-9 months in West Africa for analysis and writing-up period of the dissertation and the applicants have to be in Bonn, Germany. Closing date for the application is August 11, 2013.
PATHWAYS Leadership for Progress Awards for Developing Countries in Kenya, 2013
PATHWAYS Leadership for Progress is an international leadership training program which invites applications for annual awards for developing countries to help applicants in moving their projects forward and assists them with university fees. Along with participation in this program, applicants can also apply for fee assistance to pursue undergraduate degree at University of Nairobi or Kenyatta University in Kenya up to 2 semesters per year contingent upon satisfactory progress each year. Priority will be given to students from disadvantaged groups such as AIDS orphans and girls. Applications should be submitted by July 30, 2013.
ICTP-IAEA Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP) Fellowships for Developing Countries, 2013
IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation through the IAEA Technical Cooperation Fund is offering fellowships for developing countries. These fellowships are awarded to PhD students in the fields of physics and mathematics. The fellowships are awarded for a period of at least three months to be spent by the fellows at host institutes during the first year and it may be renewed for up to two additional successive years.  The deadline for applications is 31 July 2013.
Country Scholarships for Nigerian Students at University of Surrey in UK, 2013/14
University of Surrey is offering country scholarships for Students of Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kuwait, Nigeria, Qatar, UAE and Vietnam. Students must be considered an overseas student for fees purposes and hold an unconditional offer to enter. Scholarship is awarded on competitive basis. The deadline for applications is 1st August preceding the start of  programme in September/October.
Nigeria LNG Limited Undergraduate Scholarships for Nigerian Students Scheme, 2013/14
The Management of Nigeria LNG Limited is inviting applications for undergraduate scholarship scheme. This scholarship is established to promote academic excellence in Rivers State and the rest of the Country. First year undergraduate students in Nigerian universities are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Beneficiaries of other scholarship schemes, Second to final year students and Part-time students are not eligible for this scholarship. The application deadline for 2013/14 academic year is 3rd July, 2013.
INSEAD Freddy Salem Scholarships for West African Students, 2013/14
INSEAD Freddy Salem Postgraduate Scholarships for students of  West African country but INSEAD shall particularly seek candidates from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and Benin. Scholarships are available for pursuing MBA in France and Singapore. INSEAD Freddy Salem Scholarships are provided by INSEAD Business School and cover up to €20,000. Scholarship Application Deadline: 22 August 2013.
The King’s Nigerian Law Scholarships at King’s College London in UK, 2013/14
King’s College London offers Nigerian Law scholarships. Scholarships are provided in the field of law. Scholarship is available for Nigerian resident students with an incredible opportunity to gain support to study Law at postgraduate level at the Dickson Poon School of Law.
